SAIC Fiber Lab, USA

An unbeweavable installation in downtown Chicago

Altro Symphonia

“This renovation was very much needed and has positively impacted the work flow and cleanliness in the department.”

Melissa Leandro,
Assistant Director for SAIC’s Fiber Material Studies department

Issue

Housing a world-renown art collection comprised of 5,000 years’ worth of international pieces, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) provides students with the ideal environment for honing their creativity through a multitude of organizations and programs.

When the time came for SAIC’s Department of Fiber and Material Studies to upgrade its workspace, the safety of students and faculty involved became its top priority. The Fiber and Material Studies program offers an interdisciplinary education of topics relevant to textile creation, history and theory. With constant exposure to water and dye spills, the department required a flooring solution with plenty of slip and stain resistance. They also needed durability in a smooth, stylish package.

Approach

Weese Langley Weese Architects selected three different shades of Altro Symphonia to revitalize SAIC’s fiber lab. This product provides an impressive level of slip resistance, making it a great choice for areas where safety is a concern.

Solution

Engineered to bridge the gap between smooth and slip resistant flooring, Altro Symphonia is constructed with the most durable materials available and can be easily cleaned without jeopardizing its surface integrity.

“Being here in the department for so many years, it is refreshing to now walk and work within a space that was designed specifically to accommodate our needs.”

Assistant Director for SAIC’s Fiber Material Studies department
